"Does exactly what I intended" 2009-09-12
By allthumbs (Hummelstown, PA United States)
Since my youngest son left for college, the toilets in his bath and the powder room get less use. Because of infrequent flushings, the bowl and underside of the lid would accumulate mildew especially in the spring and fall when the HVAC wasn't operating much. I find the idea of never cleaning the toilets repugnant, but having to clean them every few days in order to keep the mildew under control was a bit much especially when they weren't being used. I did not want to use a product in the tank water that would rot the flapper and the seals, and the hang-over-the-rim-of-the-bowl products made no sense since they wouldn't deal with problems under the rim. This product made a lot of sense since the active discharge goes right down the overflow/refill tube and not into the tank water thus bypassing the flapper and seals. The Kaboom Scrub Free system has been installed in both toilets for over two months. Those toilets are cleaned every two weeks. There has not been even one speck of mildew, and the toilets are sparkling clean between cleanings. The top of the tablet chamber still comes off easily. If possible when installing the unit, I would try to keep the level of the discharge tube below the top of the tablet chamber. Thus the top of the chamber should not fill and the cap threads not become fouled. Even so, the price of the system has been lowered so that it's competitive with the price of the refill tabs. Therefore I don't care if the unit might need to be replaced every now and then. Excellent product that does precisely what I needed it to do.

 ""Product doesn't stand up!"" 2009-09-10

I am the daughter of a plumber and am pretty darn good fixing all my own plumbing. I was impressed by the statement on the box saying "Won't harm tank parts- like drop-in solids or products". I had tried several of those "drop-in" products and they indeed damage the flapper valve.

After replacing the flapper valve, I installed the Kaboom Scrub Free Toilet Cleaner because it says it won't harm the tank parts. Well, after 4 months the flapper valve was almost disintegrated. Pretty darn disappointing!

"What has changed from the Puricle 110?" 2009-07-27
By Ms.Terry Ryder (NorCal USA)
I have used the Puricle 110 system for 15-20 years, and it has worked great. I have not actually tried the Kaboom 'Scrub Free' version of this same product yet, but wonder what has changed? It is just a little plastic container with a chubby chlorine tablet in the refill water line. The tablet only sits in water when it is refilling, and is not sitting in the bottom of the tank and constantly dissolving. Simple concept that works and makes the tablets last much longer. The darn container is too small to fit another brand of chlorine tablet in there.

If your toilet is really stained, this somewhat gentle product will take a week or so to bleach out the existing black mold that couldn't first be scrubbed out. It won't remove existing hard-water rings, but seems to help prevent them.

You may want to coat the container's threads with Vaseline to make taking off the lid easier when you go to refill it; otherwise it tends to get crytals of chlorine inside the threads and can be tough to open. Vaseline also helps seal it better without having to over-tighten it. Most bathrooms have an old container of vaseline sitting around.

The quick way to get rid of hard water rings is to use a medium-hard pumice stone from the hardware store. It should dissolve slightly while you are using it. If it is gentle enough for your skin, it is OK for the porcelin.

Between the two (pumice and Scrub Free), you can have a clean toilet bowl in 10 minutes and keep it that way for months without doing anything further.

 "Not worth the effort" 2009-05-29
By P. Schwerin
The Kaboom Scrub Free! Continuous Toilet Cleaning System did keep the toilet bowl clean for about three months as advertised, but when it came time to refill it, I could not get it open. I removed the unit from the tank and removed the hoses to get a good grip on it and still unable to open it. I got the channel locks out and worked on it for another five minutes. The cap cracked and still would not come off. This product is not worth the effort.

 "Kaboom goes kaput" 2009-04-21
By CheeryToes (the First Coast)
This product does not work for me. It was easy to install - the idea is great but the application is not there. I can smell the bleach the first few flushes but then soon thereafter no chlorine smell, no clean and the tabs are still there after a few months of use almost completely intact. I like the concept, so I'm thinking I might try another manufacturer's brand. But I cannot recommend this product. It didn't work in either of my 2 toilets.
